This was my first Louis L'Amour novel。 I would like to read at least one more to get a better feel of it。 Having read his autobiography, I did expect a bit more。 I found the story a bit disjointed, too many storylines going on at the same time。 The protagonist's thought process didn't seem genuine to how a woman would truly handle those situations。 This was my first Louis L'Amour novel。 I would like to read at least one more to get a better feel of it。 Having read his autobiography, I did expect a bit more。 I found the story a bit disjointed, too many storylines going on at the same time。 The protagonist's thought process didn't seem genuine to how a woman would truly handle those situations。 。。。more
Jeff Benham,
This is a very good, well written book。 It shows the toughness of women in the old west。
Sophia,
A woman stage coach station manager, an enemy from her past, a gold shipment, and a wild Colorado Territory during the height of the Civil War make for one unique and riveting western tale。 Louis L’Amour entertains with his lone, male hero westerns, but he excels at the courageous, tough women on a few occasions he tackled。My full review will post at The Reading Frenzy TBA。

A solid but relatively formulaic L'Amour, the Cherokee Trail is full of the ingredients of what makes L'Amour entertaining to read。 There is a down on her luck lady--pushed out of her wealthy but burned out Virginia home and recently widowed by the perfidy of a man who led a band of renegades taking advantage of the Civil War to raid and burn down the lady's home in the first place。 The lady takes over the management of a stage coach station in Colorado--the only job she is able to take over and A solid but relatively formulaic L'Amour, the Cherokee Trail is full of the ingredients of what makes L'Amour entertaining to read。 There is a down on her luck lady--pushed out of her wealthy but burned out Virginia home and recently widowed by the perfidy of a man who led a band of renegades taking advantage of the Civil War to raid and burn down the lady's home in the first place。 The lady takes over the management of a stage coach station in Colorado--the only job she is able to take over and which had been given to her husband before his assassination。 Supported by a young Irish immigrant girl, a young orphan, her own daughter and a mysterious but deadly shot, the widow manages to clear out the station of the filth and drunks, and charms her neighbors to supporting her even as she manages to avenge her husband。 At the end of the book, we are left wondering who she may marry and whether she will stay in the West or return to her ancestral home in Virginia。 Along the way L'Amour does put forth a number of wise sayings which no doubt he has learned from his copious travel and readings--L'Amour being a self taught author。At one stage, the widow explains to her daughter what it would take to get her to marry someone again:"You will want to be proud of him when you introduce him to your friends, and you want him to be comfortable with them, as you must be with his friends。 One must never marry a man thinking he will change or that you will change him。 If he does or you do, then he will not be the same man you married, and the less for it。" But more generally, L'Amour paints a picture of the new West--one that is self-reliant and where people look at people not for what they were but for what they are。 And that though Europe and the East Coast had books and witty company, it was/is not necessarily better than the West。A solid and entertaining novel, but to my mind too much the same as the Kiowa Trail and not as good as Bendigo Shafter。 But L'Amour is a remarkable man, and I will read next his autobiography。 。。。more

Really cute story about a strong women who runs a station in the Wild West! Quite short and one of the most fast paced books I've read actually, it's very packed with a lot of things happening。 Huge plus with a romance not being largely featured, despite being an older novel and the main character being a woman。 Really cute story about a strong women who runs a station in the Wild West! This book was nice… keep in mind I am not actually a Louis L’Amour or Western genre fan and I only read this because my parents love it。The interesting thing about this book was that it was a Western about a woman, which is not a common thing。 The way this author writes is very honest, and I can see why adults might like it but not a teen!My favourite part was when the Natives came to the station!
Liz,
Kind of stilted but I enjoyed the Heroine。 She was badass。
Amy,
A short & sweet western。 I enjoyed the storyline about a woman being capable for herself & the interesting characters she came across。

Hi I just want to say that this is a good read and what I expect from Louis L'Amour I have read more of his western novels than any other western writer and have never been disappointed。 Hi I just want to say that this is a good read and what I expect from Louis L'Amour I have read more of his western novels than any other western writer and have never been disappointed。 。。。more

Louis L’Amour has great stories, although his writing style isn’t my favorite。 My favorite Disney series is based -very loosely- on this book (Five Mile Creek, mostly unavailable), so it was a must-read, finally!
Arliegh Kovacs,
The Cherokee Trail is one of my favorite western stories。 Our female lead is a clever and competent lady。 Before the War-Between-the-States, her father had taught her how to run their large plantation。 After her husband is killed (in cold blood by one of the baddies) she comes west to take his place as the newly hired stagecoach station manager。 Because she knows that her employer may think she is unsuited for the job, she (of course) sets out to clean up the station, set everything in order, an The Cherokee Trail is one of my favorite western stories。 Our female lead is a clever and competent lady。 Before the War-Between-the-States, her father had taught her how to run their large plantation。 After her husband is killed (in cold blood by one of the baddies) she comes west to take his place as the newly hired stagecoach station manager。 Because she knows that her employer may think she is unsuited for the job, she (of course) sets out to clean up the station, set everything in order, and serve the most delicious food on the line。 The hero is a manly-man。 Handsome, experienced in all of the western virtues。There are new friends, conniving enemies, scheming villains and their mercenary minions, handsome heroes, and a few candidates for husband #2。 Oh, and Indians。I recommend this for any lovers of Louis L'Amour and his western tales。 。。。more

ExcellentThis was the book that they based the tv series Five Mile Creek on, and yes, the book is better! I really enjoyed reading about Mary and Matty and Peg, Wat and Temple Boone and Ridge。 Characters from a world of the west。 Love this kind of story。

Classic L'Amour and one of the best examples of his skill at writing strong female characters。 Really like the fact that this one isn't Mary Breydon finding a new husband, but about her journey to forming a new life as a Western woman。 Sure, there are some plot holes, but I always enjoy re-reading this one。 Classic L'Amour and one of the best examples of his skill at writing strong female characters。 Really like the fact that this one isn't Mary Breydon finding a new husband, but about her journey to forming a new life as a Western woman。 Sure, there are some plot holes, but I always enjoy re-reading this one。 。。。more

Entertaining reading 📚Another very will written romantic thriller western novel with interesting characters。 The story line is intense twist and turns leading to the violent conclusion。 I would recommend this novel to anyone who read westerners。 Enjoy reading 🔰2020😬

Great novel of strong women of the west in Colorado during the civil war。 L;Amour cannot write a bad novel!!!!!
J。H。 Gordon,
I don't typically reach for westerns but a customer of mine recommended this book to me because it features a strong female protagonist and he thought I might like her。 He was right, she is a total boss, and this was a really fun read。 Sure it's a bit formulaic and the ending ties up a bit too neatly but I enjoyed it nonetheless and now I can say that I've read Louis L'Amour。 I don't typically reach for westerns but a customer of mine recommended this book to me because it features a strong female protagonist and he thought I might like her。 He was right, she is a total boss, and this was a really fun read。 Sure it's a bit formulaic and the ending ties up a bit too neatly but I enjoyed it nonetheless and now I can say that I've read Louis L'Amour。 。。。more

I really liked this one。Mainly due to it's change of pace。Mary has had her home ruined during the civil war。Heading west with her husband。 He is murdered。 By the man that led the raid。That destroyed her home。Mary, with her young daughter, arrives at a stage station。Her husband was to take charge of running it。Now Mary, along with an young Irish woman seeking her own fortune。Do something very unexpected of women, of this time。They begin to take over, and run the station。In hopes, if seen as being I really liked this one。Mainly due to it's change of pace。Mary has had her home ruined during the civil war。Heading west with her husband。 He is murdered。 By the man that led the raid。That destroyed her home。Mary, with her young daughter, arrives at a stage station。Her husband was to take charge of running it。Now Mary, along with an young Irish woman seeking her own fortune。Do something very unexpected of women, of this time。They begin to take over, and run the station。In hopes, if seen as being good enough。 When the stage company learns of the change。They will keep them on as station agents。There are outlaws, and Indians。Add to that, the man that murdered her husband。 Is nearby, trying to make a name for himself。His past behind him。 His reach for political power。May only be stopped。 If he doesn't eliminate Mary。The one lady, aware of his true past。Having a lady be the main protagonist, and lead character。In such a diverse, unique setting。 Helps make this seem a fresh break。From the usual fare。 。。。more

One of my favoritesI like this book Because of its colorful characters especially Mary b r e y d o n。 She was strong and yet feminine tried to do everything possible to protect those around her and build a new life。 I like to think in the end that you finally chose Temple Boone。 Stacy would have been a little bit too much like the life she left behind and if she was going to change any like she was already changing she would go all the way and go for temple
Kld2003,
Louis L’Amour writes simple, clean books where good triumphs over evil。 His characters are honest, hard working and have grit in their veins to persevere through all trials and obstacles in their paths。 He doesn’t add gratuitous violence or sex scenes to sell/tell his story yet they are compelling reads。 I have read several of his books and never been disappointed。 You just feel good about life when finishing one of his books。

I was very wary going into this book, thinking westerns weren't going to be "my thing。" When it comes to reading challenges, though, I'm willing to try anything at least once。 I picked this one at random from my library's shelves and was pleasantly surprised。 It was a succinct, well told story featuring three-dimensional characters。 One of the things I liked the most was that the author didn't bog the story down with a lot of back story on the characters。 He included what was important and left I was very wary going into this book, thinking westerns weren't going to be "my thing。" When it comes to reading challenges, though, I'm willing to try anything at least once。 I picked this one at random from my library's shelves and was pleasantly surprised。 It was a succinct, well told story featuring three-dimensional characters。 One of the things I liked the most was that the author didn't bog the story down with a lot of back story on the characters。 He included what was important and left some up to the imagination。 I would certainly read another book by this author--and do so happily。 。。。more

Takes you there。Great read。A visit to the new West at the time of the Civil War。 The story maintains your interest。 The characters are real。 Loved it。
Laura,
A little bit different since in this one the protagonist is the woman, not the man。 It's also different in that almost the entire book takes place in one small setting, instead the usual sweeping expanse of the West。 I did like it, but I guess since it was Mary Brayden's story there was wasn't much room for Temple Boone, which left me wishing to know more of him。 Does he get his own book later on?
